What is depression?
Depression is a common but serious mood disorder that effects over 350 million people worldwide. It has risen to the number one cause of disability in the US. Those suffering with depression have the feeling of continual sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite, trouble sleeping, increased fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
What causes depression?
Researchers have found that individuals who are suffering from depression have an altered nervous system and brain function. It is also important to remember that depressive patients commonly have and overactive amygdala and an underactive prefrontal cortex. The amygdala is the portion of the brain that controls emotional responses and the prefrontal cortex controls all executive functions of the body.
What is the treatment for depression?
Today there are many antidepressant medications on the market used to help treat depression. Many of them will help the symptoms of depression but thy may also trigger other side effects.
