Allergies are one of the most common chronic illnesses. An allergic reaction begins in the immune system. The body naturally fights off foreign organisms and bacteria to protect itself. When your immune system mistakes a harmless substance entering the body as an invader, you develop what is called an allergy. Your body believes that that allergen (dust, pollen, dirt mold, food, or chemicals) is attacking the body, so the body fights back in response. This is when the common symptoms of allergies kick in.
There can be a variety of symptoms associated with allergies. Symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, swelling and asthma are among some of the most common that people experience. In more severe cases, people can experience a severe reaction to an allergen causing anaphylaxis.
An allergy can often be diagnosed by a simple blood and skin test. If you are interested in discovering if you have an allergy to a particular food or substance, you should contact your primary care physician to learn more about the diagnostic tests and exam options.
Treatment options will depend on the type and severity of the allergy. In most cases treatment consists of medication, allergy shots and avoiding the known allergen if possible.
The problem inherently resides in your body’s overall perception of the allergen. All forms of perception are controlled by the nervous system. When the nervous system is overworked and placed in a high stress environment, it will react more. Chiropractic adjustments free-up the nervous system, allowing the body to function properly and deal with stressors more easily. This in turn will help to decrease the body’s reaction to the allergen and decrease the symptoms associated with the allergy.
